Mark Shann-Disruptive Oil and Gas Discoveries GOM and Beyond
Mark Shann of Westlawn Americas talks about new ideas and controversies in the search for oil and gas in the US and southern GOM. What are the main differences across the Gulf in terms of petroleum systems and hydrocarbon potential? Is there new play potential from recent global analogs. (recorded April 17, 2024)
Disruptive discoveries are the material exploration finds that can reset basin-creaming curves and reinvigorate exploration (think Starbroek in Guyana). They require some thinking beyond the norm, based on careful data observation, in combination with the application of new technology, especially seismic imaging. This talk examines some of key similarities and differences in the p...

Very nice summary. I've been trying to find evidence from deep wells that confirm the hypothesis that post-rifting Mesozoic sediments overlie Paleozoic sediments in the areas shown to have crustal thinning (green areas in the figure at minute 13). Where have any wells encountered Paleozoic sediments under what's understood to be original locations of Louann Salt deposition?

At what point do you geologists from Texas and Mexico talk to the guys from the Pacific Northwest or the Scots? How do you explain a SYSTEM if you stay in your cubby-holes? I can see escarpments in NY and Scotland. PUT THE SYSTEM TOGETHER! You guys are too segmented. I travel to NW New Mexico/NE Arizona. I know the rocks say "swamp" at some point and riverine at another. Paleomagnetism, unless you're too orthodox. I'm only saying that if your theories don't match up with someone else's thousands of miles and millions of years away, then there needs to be RESOLUTION! Tie them together. One front.

Explaining up and down does not make you a scientist. Explain what changed and why. Reanalysis of data is actually good science, unlike this presentation.

Good, reasonable explanation as to why the Tertiary volcanism activity drove off hydrocarbons... but, that being the case, why are the thin seam coal present of such low grade, poorly bituminous vs a higher grade bituminous or even low grade anthracitic???

This is one man's opinion/interpretation of some data. Science prides itself on eliminating this kind of presentation. This is why he states his non-affiliation to his professional group. I will say that it is good that some will question the process but when the majority are in consensus with AGW and it's causes, and they are all top in their fields, Bob is in a very very small group of doubters. The group is continuing to get smaller as more data is compiled, crunched and computed.
